Welcome from Kristen Barbee, Chair and Shirley Gordon, Chair-elect of the Qualitative Research Interest Group. The purpose (Our MISSION perhaps) of the Qualitative RIG is to:

  • Promote qualitative methodology with an agenda of furthering awareness amongst SNRS regarding rigor and scholarly work
  • Provide a mechanism for mentorship of qualitative methods and networking opportunities

We offer networking opportunities, peer support, and inspiration to others interested in this area of work and research. We encourage all members to participate. We welcome all interested parties in our area of work--researchers, clinicians, academicians, and students to our RIG. Be sure to “sign-up” by logging in to the Members-Only section and choose which RIG(s) to join. There is no fee to participate and you can join up to three RIGs as part of your membership benefits. Just “click” on the topic and the Resource Center will do the rest!

We met at the 2014 Annual SNRS Conference in San Antonio, TX. We discussed the following:

  1. Discussed need for rigor explanations on qualitative posters. Participants weren’t aware of qualitative judging criteria. These criteria will be forwarded to the SNRS board and program committee for inclusion in information about abstracts.
  2. Going to attempt to meet at a separate time so that members can be involved in other RIG meetings to provide expertise on qualitative methods within these RIG discussions.

Our recent activities and/or current projects and/or opportunities include:  five members of the qualitative RIG hosted a preconference workshop at the 2014 annual conference on rigor in qualitative methods, which was well-attended and received. Current projects include becoming more of a voice within SNRS, continuing to advocate for separate meeting times at the annual conference in order to allow us to be mentors for other RIG members who may be doing qualitative research within that RIG, and continuing to advocate for qualitative methodology within SNRS.
