Academic Nurse Managed Centers (ANMC) RIG
WELCOME!
History of ANMC RIG
A group of SNRS members met during the February 2005 Annual Research Conference and discussed their common interest in establishing a RIG for Academic Nurse Managed Centers. Through the efforts of Drs. Julie Sebastian, Marcia Stanhope, and William Cody, the ANMC RIG was established.
The RIG’s first scholarly activity was to submit a proposal for a presentation at the 2006 Annual Research Conference. The proposal was accepted for a symposter. This presentation format was new to many at the time, and once again, through Julie Sebastian’s leadership, several RIG members provided content for the symposter. The result was a beautifully created poster entitled “Practice-based Scholarship in Academic Nurse-Managed Health Centers” which represented research activities from 4 different universities: Florida Atlantic University, University of Mississippi, University of South Carolina, and University of Tennessee.

The symposter concept facilitated dialogue during the poster session among researchers and students who shared similar interests in conducting research about or within ANMCs. SNRS plans to continue the grouping of poster presentations by RIG-related content at subsequent conferences.
Our RIG chairperson, Dr. Julie Sebastian, moved to another region of the country in 2006 which left Dr. Susan Beidler, co-chair, in the leadership position. Dr. Ellen Jones then assumed the role of co-chair. Since Julie’s departure, it has been difficult to regain the momentum that was started during the inaugural year.
The RIG meeting at the 2007 conference was attended by too few members to make any decisions about participation in opportunities for RIG dedicated symposia or issues of SOJNR. A RIG listserv has been established but has not been utilized. Websites for each RIG became available in 2007 and as they say…the rest is history!

Opportunities for ANMC RIG
Dedicated Symposia
In 2006, the BOD decided that two RIGs would be guaranteed opportunities to conduct a symposium at the annual conference. Decisions regarding which RIG would present each year were made in response to the RIG chair/co-chair who expressed the most interest in participating in this opportunity. The Bio-behavioral and Qualitative RIGs were the first to participate in symposia during the 2007 conference. During the 2008 conference, the Parent-Child RIG will participate in a dedicated symposium. Future dedicated symposia are:
2009 - Administration & Health Promotion & Psych/Mental health
2010 - Community Health/Public Health & Minority Health
2011 - Aging/Gerontology & Education
The RIGs that have not participated in this opportunity are ours (ANMC), Ethics, Psychometrics, and Research in Clinical Settings.
RIG-focused Issues of Southern Online Journal of Nursing Research
Another new opportunity for RIGs was made available in 2006. Each issue of the SOJNR will target manuscripts related to a RIG area of interest. The first issue includes manuscripts reviewed and selected by the Education RIG and is almost ready for release. A second issue will be released later in 2008 and is being edited by the Health Promotion RIG.
2008 Annual RIG Meeting
Friday, February 22 5:00-6:00 PM
It is EXTREMELY important for our RIG members to meet during the 2008 conference in order to determine whether there is any interest in participating in a future symposium or issue of the SOJNR. Please send any topics for discussion/agenda items to Susan Beidler, chair, at: sbeidler@unmc.edu
One important agenda item is the election of RIG chair and co-chair. Please indicate your interest in either of these leadership positions.
Thank you!
