I am pleased to present this issue of SOJNR with its special focus on aging. Members of the Aging RIG responded with enthusiasm to the Call for Papers. These manuscripts, which were submitted by the March 1, 2009 due date, are being published 5 months after the submission deadline. I am deeply grateful to the hard work of our Guest Editor, Dr. Elaine Souder, and to the SNRS reviewers who worked diligently to ensure that all deadlines were met in a timely fashion. Our reviewers include methodological and content experts from both within and outside the United States. While most of them are SNRS members, we have also sought reviewers with specialized expertise from other areas of the US as well as from Canada and the United Kingdom. It is rewarding to know that our colleagues in both academic and service settings are dedicated to ensuring that the highest quality peer reviewers are involved in evaluating manuscripts submitted for consideration. It also is a pleasure to see the increase in submission of manuscripts that are not intended to answer a call for papers for our themed issue. In the current issue we have an equal number of author-initiated papers as we have papers that are related to the issue theme. That means that all SNRS members have the opportunity to publish in our journal, and that our membership will find articles that are relevant to their content and methodological interests, even if the issue’s theme is not especially relevant to their work. Another encouraging sign that our Journal is thriving and meeting membership needs is the increasing number of doctoral students who are submitting papers for consideration and who are serving as manuscript reviewers. We have an obligation to ensure that those who are at the beginning of their careers have the opportunity to experience those activities that will prepare them for the full scope of their responsibilities upon completion of their studies. Their willingness to participate in Journal activities and the quality of their contributions bode well for our profession’s future. I encourage all of you to become involved. This is your journal, and it is your contributions that will make it a success. I am hopeful that with another year or two of regular publication of quality articles that we will be able to submit the documentation necessary for being indexed in MedLine. I hope to see many more SNRS members submit manuscripts for consideration and volunteer to become manuscript reviewers. I promise you a user-friendly experience, timely consideration of your work, and a respectful peer-review process.
