Message from the Editor

We are pleased to present the abstracts from the podium presentations and symposia from the 2009 SNRS Conference in this issue of SOJNR. Due to technical difficulties we are unable to include the abstracts from the poster sessions at this time. They will appear separately as a supplement to this issue and will be published in late June or early July.

The poster sessions at the Conference were outstanding. The participation from doctoral students throughout the region was robust, and the quality of their work should make all of us confident that the next generation of nurse scientists is well prepared to assume leadership roles in the profession. The large number of posters that were accepted for presentation meant that there were three separate poster sessions. Dr. Cindy Munro, chair of the Awards committee, announced the following poster session award recipients:

SNRS 2009 STUDENT POSTER AWARDS, POSTER SESSION 1:

First place:

Britt Pados, Heart Rate Variability as an Indicator of Physiologic Stability During Gentle, Cue-Based Feeding in the Preterm Infant

Second place:

Honorable Mention:

STUDENT POSTER AWARDS, POSTER SESSION 2:

Britt Pados, Heart Rate Variability as an Indicator of Physiologic Stability During Gentle, Cue-Based Feeding in the Preterm Infant

One of the highlights of the conference was the closing address, presented by Dr. Kevin Frick, a health economist from Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. Dr. Frick discussed ways economists and nurses can work collaboratively to enhance the relevance of our research and scholarship. In these days where the economy and health care reform are leading issues in our country, his remarks were especially germane. Dr. Frick has provided the essence of his address in comments that are included in this issue. They truly are food for both thought and action.

The Journal continues to grow and flourish. At the Board meeting following the Conference, Barbara Trumbo was named Managing Editor and Linda Pocsik was named Production Editor. Both titles are well deserved, as these colleagues are responsible for the publication and production efforts and make my job so much easier. I look forward to hearing from you and welcome suggestions on how to improve it even further.
